Cheapest way of travel from Cornwall to Montreal?

Im going to go to St. Lawrence college but I would like to live Montreal, first of all I was wondering if I could live in Montreal with a student visa not from Quebec. Also, what is cheapest way of travel between Montreal and Cornwall, ON; I already have seen the prices of VIA Rail Canada but would like to know of other options.
